It is entirely understandable that parents are concerned about the case of Principal John Acerra, who was busted for using and selling meth at school. When he was busted, he was in his office naked while watching pornography.
So what is the best way to save the children? What is the tool being pushed in American schools to keep everybody drug-free? Drug testing!
I understand that when a shocking story like this happens that people feel the need to do something about it. But we have to make sure that our actions are actually helpful. Would drug-testing have prevented this story from taking place?
It is interesting to me the way that this story is being reported. The Morning Call Online portrays him in a sympathetic light as a troubled man in need of help. This newscast from WFMZ-TV heavily emphasizes the save the children aspect of this story. Saving the children requires peeing in a cup.
I highly doubt that the invasion of privacy, the potential for lawsuits and the expense involved in implementing random drug testing could possibly be worth it.
I would also like to point out that crystal meth does not stay in the body for a long enough period of time to show up in a drug test. Drug testing is not going to be an effective deterrant for a crystal meth user.
